From personalised nameplate necklaces to heirloom rings, wearing jewellery with meaning is not a new concept. But over the past few years, more and more people have been turning to crystal jewellery, as the holistic health trend continues to gain momentum.

Beyond possessing sentimental value, crystals are said to be imbued with energy that when worn around the neck or wrist – or even sat in your pocket – can be transferred to the wearer. Acting as a form of self-care and manifestation in one, all you need to do is choose the crystal that addresses the area of your life you'd like to focus on. Their "magical" superpowers will then supposedly get to work on improving healing, reducing anxiety and even losing weight.

That's what they say, anyway – if you believe in that kinda thing! Celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham and Halle Berry (who just last week was spotted wearing the viral Maya Brenner Clarity crystal necklace Meghan Markle rocked back in May) certainly do. So we'd say it's at least worth a try, right?

What is crystal jewellery?

No longer limited to decorative accessories or shrines around the home, crystal jewellery means you can take your crystals out and about with you in style. From necklaces and bracelets to earrings and anklets, there are plenty of ways to wear your crystals that make the most of their healing *and* aesthetic properties.

Crystals are believed to enhance overall well-being (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual) by affecting the flow of energy moving in, through and around your body. If we're going really woo-woo with it, the crystals actually tap into your body's energy points, chakras and aura, so physically wearing them is thought to be a particularly effective way of letting the crystal's properties do their work.

For Georgie Roberts, founder of Wanderlust Life, crystals have formed an integral part of the brand's designs since it first launched in 2013. 'I grew up surrounded by my mum’s collection of crystals, so when I first started designing jewellery I wanted to marry gemstones with a minimal aesthetic,' she tells Women's Health.

'Ten years on, I’m still focused on gemstone jewellery because I believe it carries spirit and energy,' she says. 'When you give gemstone jewellery as a gift, it conveys deep meaning. And when you attach it to your own intention, it can be motivating.'

While some of our favourite jewellery brands including Missoma, Astrid & Miyu and Otiumberg have all incorporated crystals into their collections, more and more independent jewellery brands are popping up focused solely on crystals and dedicated to sharing information on the stones.

'According to traditional wisdom, each stone has its own properties and powers, but a lot of times these feel a little bit abstract', Georgie explains. As such, Wanderlust Life has attached a mantra to each stone that is printed on the website and the packaging their piece of jewellery is sent out in once purchased.

TBalance Crystals, a crystal healing jewellery brand founded by holistic coach Tori Boughey, implements a similar practice by incorporating letter beads into the bracelet and necklace designs that spell out phrases such as 'breathe', 'focus' and 'love'. There's also the option to create a custom piece, with Bella Hadid and Kylie Jenner both having repped custom TBalance creations, so even the biggest cynic can enjoy the crystal jewellery without having to buy into the meaning. Kylie's bracelet simply stated her name.
