More Than 2 Million Donuts, Baked Goods Recalled Over Listeria
The FDA announced that 2 million donuts were recalled last month.
Some donuts were reportedly produced for Dunkin’ stores.
Affected products are no longer being sold.
Sixty varieties and a total of over 2 million donuts were recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month due to listeria risk concerns. The FDA recently announced the recall, though affected products should no longer be in circulation.
FGF Brands, the food manufacturer responsible for the recall, also released a statement and explained that the listeria concerns were based on “non-product related findings” at a U.S. donut-making facility. The statement added that the recall was simply a “precautionary measure” and added that no donuts or food contact surfaces ever tested positive for listeria.
FGF Brands also said that the recall, which covered the United States and Canada, does not affect anything that is currently, or was recently on the market and that “all donuts are completely safe to eat.” And although the recall included both donuts and baked goods like French crullers and apple fritters, donuts were the only foods impacted in the U.S., the statement said. Dome donuts on the list, like Munchkin donut holes, were sold at Dunkin’ Donuts stores, according to a Good Morning America report. You can read a list of affected products here.
“We take food safety seriously and acted with an abundance of caution,” the FGF Brands statement read. “If you have any questions, please contact our customer service team (customercare@fgfbrands.com).”
Listeria are bacteria that can contaminate food and cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems, per the FDA. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms of infection may include flu-like muscle aches and fatigue, fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. In pregnant people, infection may cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
If it feels like there have been many food recalls lately, there have. Food safety experts previously explained to Prevention that there are likely a few different reasons why so many items have been recalled, including more ready-to-eat foods, sanitation problems, staffing issues, and interconnected food supply chains.
