The fiancée of Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki is opening up more about their relationship, her role as an NHL wife and their upcoming wedding. Caitlin Fitzgerald shared some insight into her world while speaking on a podcast hosted by Julie Petry, wife of Detroit Red Wings defenceman Jeff Petry, and Cat Toffoli, wife of San Jose Sharks alternate captain Tyler Toffoli.

On the "Never Offside" podcast's Feb. 4 episode, Fitzgerald reflected on Suzuki being named the Montreal Canadiens's newest captain in September 2022. Then 23 years old, the London, Ont.-born centre became the team's youngest-ever captain, succeeding Shea Weber, who had been the team's leader since 2018.

"We were so young — we are young," Fitzgerald said of the transition with Suzuki, who's now 25. "A lot of the vets were phasing out, we only had a few left. I just think it's surreal but it's been amazing. At the start, I was like, 'Holy s—,' for lack of better words. ... Nick is definitely amazing and so deserving, and I think they made a great choice."

Continuing her conversation with her fellow WAGs (wives and girlfriends of athletes), Fitzgerald opened up about taking over leading the Wives Fund, a money pool they pay into each year and use for special events. "Basically, it's for us to have our own little fun. ... It's something for us and we had a baby shower, we had a bachelorette this year so far," she said, adding it's also used for "trade gifts" when a player gets traded to another team.

Julie, whose husband Jeff was traded by the Montreal Canadiens in August 2023, recalled on the podcast about how Angela Price, wife of Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price, raved over Fitzgerald and said she "freaking rocks" for taking on the project.

Fitzgerald replied, saying, "I'll never forget the day Ange looked at me. We were in a suite ... at the Bell Centre and she looked at me and goes, 'Do you want to take on the Wives Fund?' She was basically telling me I was taking on the Wives Fund."

She added she learned a lot from her fellow WAGs, including Julie and Cat, as well as Shannon Allen, wife of former Montreal Canadiens goalie Jake Allen. While things are going great now, Fitzgerald noted it wasn't necessarily smooth sailing at the start.

"It's been a whirlwind the last few years going from being the young people to leading a team on both sides," she said. "This comes with leading the girls as well, which is a blast. I think in both sides of it, it's a big task to take on when you're, like, 22 years old."

Fitzgerald, who connected with Suzuki around 2016 and got engaged to the NHL player last spring, also opened up about the two lovebirds's relationship, saying they're old souls and "both 85 years old at heart." She added she's "very protective" of him, and appreciates how calm and collected he can be.

"I always make the joke that I think someone could punch Nick and he'd just ... walk away," she shared, adding her soon-to-be husband is helpful and has learned to "leave things at the rink" when it comes to having bad days.

Speaking about planning her wedding, Fitzgerald said she's learned she's "not a wedding person," particularly when it comes to planning. "I've never dreamed of a wedding. I've dreamed of the person I'm going to marry, but I'm not a wedding person."

Amid her aversion, she said her wedding planner has been "absolutely amazing" and that they do everything and she simply responds agreeing or disagreeing with the choices. "That's pretty much it. We picked most of our stuff," she noted, adding she'll have two dresses for the event.

When it comes to the actual big day, Fitzgerald said she'd most excited about all of her guests and getting "everyone together from different eras of hockey, essentially." She noted it'll be fun getting everyone back together — including people who've been traded or are no longer playing in the NHL — and meshing them with closer people in their lives.

"To have everyone in one space together is my dream come true. ... I know it's going to be so much fun, so I'm really looking forward to that," she shared.
