Millennial and Gen Z Parents Are Choosing Disney-Inspired Baby Names
Love Island contestant Molly-Mae Hague named her baby Bambi. TV host Stacey Dooley named her daughter Minnie. Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen — Anakin Skywalker himself! — named their daughter Briar Rose after Sleeping Beauty. Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who's written some of the best Disney songs, admitted he named his son Sebastian after the crab in The Little Mermaid. It seems that the Disney corporation doesn't just manufacture wishes, theme park experiences and movies. It's also out there cranking out inspiration for baby names.
And Disney isn't just a source of celebrity baby names. Some of the most popular names in the country, according to the Social Security Administration, can be traced back to Disney movies and TV shows. And why not? These names are classic, they often refer to strong heroes or heroines and they have some of that Disney magic associated with them. For parents out there looking to add a dash of whimsy to their families, wish upon a star and check out these 100 Disney baby names.
Popular Disney Baby Names
Granted, it can be hard to tell if a movie alone is responsible for a name's rise in popularity. Sometimes, it's obvious: The name Raya wasn't on the list of the Social Security Administration's top 1,000 girl names before the year 2020. After Raya and the Last Dragon came out in 2021, it re-entered the list at No. 495. Today, it's crept up to No. 353.
But the names in Peter Pan — Peter, Michael, and John — are always on the SSA's list of the top 1,000 boy names. It's impossible to tell if this is because of Disney's magic pixie dust, or if those are just common names. Still, these are names from Disney movies that have made the list of the most popular names in the United States, plus where they fell in the ranking this year.
