Milan design week’s most exciting furniture launches
There are so many things to see this Milan Design Week, but if it is new product launches you are searching for, we have you covered. From Salone del Mobile to the bustling city centre, these are the brand-new pieces that have us talking, from sofas and armchairs to tables, rugs and more…
‘Palatine’ sofa, Roche Bobois
Part of a collection called ‘Palatine’ by long-time Roche Bobois collaborator Christophe Delcourt, this new sofa has prominent piping along the cushions and armrests and sits close to the ground, as is customary in Roche Bobois’ design language. Upholstered in an alpaca-wool fabric in a bold colour, it’s a cosy, comfortable living-room addition. roche-bobois.com
‘Origata’ bench, Porro
Taking inspiration from the resourceful process used to make Japanese kimonos (where a flat and rectangular swatch of fabric is cut in straight lines and then sewn together, creating less waste), this vibrant ‘Origata’ bench by Nao Tamura for Porro is made from a single sheet of lightweight aluminium and is assembled with minimal screws. porro.com
‘Lauren’ armchair, Flexform
‘The essence of the “Lauren” armchair is travel – a nomadic object that embodies the appeal of exploration,’ explains Antonio Citterio, the designer behind Flexform’s latest addition to its seating collection. It’s finished with all the attention to fine detailing we now expect from the brand, including custom metal parts and an elegant armrest. flexform.it

‘Venus’ console, Armani Casa
In the May issue of ELLE Decoration, we introduce you to the jewellery- as-furniture trend, and the fact that Armani Casa is releasing this delicate, sculpted ‘Venus’ console at its space in the Palazzo Orsini signals that the luxurious craze is certainly here to stay. A curved lacquer and gold-leaf top rests upon a looping metallic base, creating a light and luxe look. armani.com
‘Tugendhat’ chair, Knoll
Knoll has delved into its enviable archive to discover this Mies van der Rohe gem, with the reissued design to be seen for the first time at Milan Design Week. The ‘Tugendhat’ chair, named after Villa Tugendhat in Brno, Czechoslovakia, where it was part of an interior by the designer in the 1930s, has a cantilevered form that’s sleek but very comfortable. knoll.com

This year, it’s adding Carlo Scarpa’s ‘Cornaro’ armchair to its roster, in collaboration with the architect’s son, Tobia Scarpa. The stylish chair has been enlarged, with a deeper seat to reflect the needs of modern households. cassina.com

Family-run Italian furniture manufactuer Lema invites visitors to discover exciting launches by different designers, including Federica Biasi, who will showcase the scooped ‘Omega’ lounge chair, and Roberto Lazzeroni, who is behind ‘August’ (pictured) – an elevated take on the humble trestle table form using marble, brass and wood. lemamobili.com
‘Cross’ lounge chair, Bonaldo
The standout offering from Bonaldo’s trio of new seating designs is the ‘Cross’ lounge chair by Alain Gilles. Named for its x-shaped base, accentuated to become a graphic and a functional feature, the chair’s striking silhouette is further exaggerated by a curving backrest and thin metal armrests. bonaldo.com
‘Vincent Open Air’ sofa, Meridiani
In time for al-fresco season, Meridiani will unveil the ‘Vincent Open Air’ sofa by Andrea Parisio; a modular outdoor design that can be configured for any garden. Its adaptability is due to its tubular frame, made of iroko wood and aluminium, with interlocking components. It’s a fusion of comfort and elegance. meridiani.it
‘Yaku’ console table, Gervasoni
This clean-cut wooden console table by Gabriele and Oscar Buratti is one of two new pieces being released by Gervasoni 1882 (the other is a lounge chair by Cristina Celestino). Its sturdily wide legs combined with the relative thinness of its top make it an interesting choice for narrow hallways. gervasoni1882.com
‘Bold’ dining table, Ethimo
There’s a familiarity to Ethimo’s newest launch, the ‘Boldini’ coffee table. Available in three coloured- stone options and three sizes, all of which are mini versions of the ‘Bold’ dining table. As the name suggests, the look is distinctive, but we enjoy the subtle change in texture between the top and the ceramic base. ethimo.com
‘Yuzu’ chair, Arflex
Described by Arflex as looking like a Pokémon character, the ‘Yuzu’ chair by Swedish architectural studio Claesson Koivisto Rune is undeniably cute. Combining Italian craftsmanship with a Scandi touch, it may gain the kind of popularity afforded to its namesake fruit – a Japanese delicacy that is a foodie favourite. arflex.it
