Move over the cheese throwing challenge, there’s another viral challenge doing the rounds on the Internet.

But while the 48-hour challenge and the Bird-box challenge came with parental warnings, the microwave challenge is altogether more light-hearted.

Ever stood in front of your microwave mesmerised by the slowly spinning turntable gently cooking your food? Well that’s the inspo behind the new challenge currently going viral on short video app TikTok.

The difference is, it isn’t food that’s spinning, but people.

To take part in the challenge you have to film yourself sitting down while spinning seamlessly, as if by some unknown magic force.

Basically, you need to pretend to be a plate of food being reheated in the microwave.

To add an extra complication, you should ideally perform the challenge to the song ‘Slow Dancing in the Dark’, by Japanese artist, Joji, and aim to complete your spin at the point of the microwave-sounding ‘ding’ in the song, to signal the fact that you’re cooked, we guess!

According to Know Your Meme, the trend seems to have started with TikTok user @djtaylortot, who last month uploaded a video of his own microwave challenge, urging others to give it a go.

It is worth noting, however, that the trend may have actually originated years earlier as back in 2017 as members of BTS appear to be doing the classic microwave spin in a video.

Either way the challenge has really taken off of late, with people scrambling to try it themselves and share the results online.

Microwave challenge fans recommend performing your turn on a slippery, hard wood floor to help maintain as smooth a spin as poss.

The trick is hiding your hand out of sight and using it to twist you round as jerk-less as possible, but some experts have even managed it completely hands-free!

This father and daughter have really mastered the move.

While, this guy even attempted his microwave challenge on the kitchen counter.

And we’re loving the outfit this girl chose to give the challenge a go.
