Yet, as she revealed in an interview with Good Morning America, the Obamas, like many other couples, went through counselling at one point during their marriage.

She told interviewer Robin Roberts: “I know too many young couples who struggle and think there’s something wrong with them and I want them to know that Michelle and Barack Obama, who have a phenomenal marriage and love each other, we work on our marriage.”

Michelle, who first met Barack when she mentored him at a law practice they were both working at, also shared what she had gained through the counselling process.

She said to Roberts: “Marriage counselling for us was one of those ways where we learned how to talk out our differences. What I learnt about myself was my happiness was up to me.”

The full, live interview with Michelle will air on Tuesday 13 November on Good Morning America, the same day Michelle’s memoir, ‘Becoming’, will be released.

In her memoir ‘Becoming’, Michelle also opens up about her struggles with fertility before conceiving her two daughters, Malia and Sasha.
