Melania Trump chooses non-American designer for first inauguration event
Unlike many (if not all) First Ladies before her, Melania Trump controversially opted for a non-American designer for a pre-inauguration dinner held last night.
Wearing a gorgeous pale gold gown by Reem Acra, Melania appeared to be letting everyone know that she will be a First Lady like no other. Although Reem Acra is based in New York, the designer was born in Lebanon.
Traditionally, political figures wear American designers to promote the country’s talent. It is believed that Melania will be sticking to this tradition later today by donning a Ralph Lauren design at the inauguration ceremony.
Last night’s black-tie gala – dubbed the ‘Candlelight Dinner’ – saw the entire Trump family decked out in their finest with Ivanka Trump choosing a striking monochrome look by US designer, Carolina Herrera.
Only a few well-known faces attended including Caitlyn Jenner, who wore a fringed black piece, and actress Jessica Lange.
Earlier in the day, Melania opted for a military-inspired look for a visit to Washington’s Lincoln Memorial. The designer behind the ensemble, Norisol Ferrari, was only too happy to speak about her decision to dress Trump when so many others have refused.
“I am absolutely opposed to discrimination in any way. I wanted to give her her own voice. Empowering women is all that matters to me. I really saw a person who is being misunderstood, who is being scrutinised,” she told WWD. “She’s a woman and a mother and I am pro-woman. That at the end of the day is very important to me – equality for women and for all human beings. If that’s what I really believe, I had to do it.”
