Will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal marriage improve race relations?
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s royal wedding is fast approaching. And while the couple’s family, friends, and fans are clearly overjoyed about the nuptials on May 19, the fact that a British royal is marrying a biracial American woman still draws criticism.
But Parisa Fitz-Henley, who plays Markle in Lifetime’s made-for-TV movie Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance, says she has hopes that the love story — both onscreen and in real life — will send a message about what relationships really look like.
“I hope that people will be able to see past titles and nationalities and races, and all of the other things that truly in a capital ‘T’ true sense don’t really matter, and see people coming together,” she explained during a Build series discussion on Tuesday. The Jamaican-American actress, who said she “never saw interracial families on television,” went on to say that she hopes the film, which will premiere May 13, will inspire everyone to see themselves in Harry and Meghan’s love story.
The impact this royal wedding will have on racism and classism in the U.K. and beyond has yet to be determined. But Fitz-Henley’s analysis that this TV film (and ultimately Harry and Meghan’s real-life bond) is “a really sweet homage to a love, a friendship … a friendship that’s tested by challenges, like all of us” seems pretty spot-on.
