In a new interview, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has candidly shared how she and her husband, Prince Harry, are feeling following the loss of Queen Elizabeth II (who passed away last month at the age of 96). Coincidentally, the Sussexes happened to be in the UK at the time of Her Majesty's death, something that Meghan says she is grateful for.

Speaking to Variety for a new cover story, the Duchess praised the Queen for being the ultimate female leader and said she has been reflecting a lot on the first official royal outing that she and Her Majesty attended together, back in 2018 (the pair appeared at an event to open the new Mersey Gateway Bridge on 14 June 2018 in Cheshire, England).

"There's been such an outpouring of love and support. I’m really grateful that I was able to be with my husband to support him, especially during that time," Meghan explained. "What's so beautiful is to look at the legacy that his grandmother was able to leave on so many fronts. Certainly, in terms of female leadership, she is the most shining example of what that looks like.

"I feel deep gratitude to have been able to spend time with her and get to know her. It’s been a complicated time, but my husband, ever the optimist, said, 'Now she's reunited with her husband'."

On the subject of being accepted into the Royal Family, Meghan said she has nothing but gratitude towards Britain's longest-serving monarch.

"I've reflected on that first official engagement that I had with her, how special that felt," she shared. "I feel fortunate. And I continue to be proud to have had a nice warmth with the matriarch of the family."

Also in the interview, Meghan discussed her podcast, Archetypes, and looked back at an earlier interview she did this year with New York Magazine, which was met with a mixed response.

In the most recent episode of her audio series, the Duchess shared that she felt objectified during her previous role in which she worked as a 'Briefcase Girl' on the American version of Deal Or No Deal, whilst speaking about the stereotype of being a 'bimbo' to Paris Hilton.
