Masterchef: The Professionals star forced to quit after boiling soup accident
Cristina Maia had a cooking accident on the show
What did you miss?
Masterchef: The Professionals was marred by an accidental explosion of soup as Brazilian chef Cristina Maia had to withdraw from the competition.
During the final round, the 51-year-old needed immediate medical attention after popping open her blender full of boiling hot liquid.
As the lid came off, its contents rained over Cristina as well as her kitchen station.
Having backed away from the scene, a member of the crew assisted the chef by holding a cold towel on her injured chin.
What, how and why?
A trainee at Leith's School of Food and Wine, Cristina was competing in the Signature Menu round set by judges Gregg Wallace, Monica Galetti and Marcus Wareing alongside fellow contestants Rosie, Tommy and Charlie at the time.
But the stubbornness of her appliance would prove her downfall.
Watch the shocking moment the blender explodes covering contestant in boiling soup.
"Wow!" cried Gregg in response to the accident.
Cristina apologised for the soupy mess while wiping her neck area. "You alright? Is that red hot?" he asked.
She and a medic were then spotted tending to her burns at the sink.
"Unfortunately, Cristina's had a bit of an accident. She put the bisque into a blender and it was incredibly hot. When she released the lid, unfortunately, some of it hit her face," Marcus told the camera.
Overfilled blenders are susceptible to eruptions like this due to excessive pressure.
What else happened/has been happening on Masterchef: The Professionals?
Rosie, Tommy, Charlie and Cristina kicked things off in the nerve-inducing Skills Test.
Marcus challenged Rosie and Tommy to prepare and cook spiced monkfish served with polenta and a chilli butter sauce.
Meanwhile, Charlie and Cristina had just 20 minutes to attack Monica's task that centred on a new kind of banana sundae; incorporating caramelised bananas, coconut cream, chocolate sauce and banana ice cream.
The subsequent Signature segment allowed 90 minutes for all four Masterchef hopefuls to dish up two of their own designs - a main course and a dessert.
Will we be back for more?
Having been put through to the quarter-finals in a Masterchef first - two chefs usually bow out at this stage - Rosie, Tommy and Charlie will all return to the kitchen on Thursday (October 26) at 8pm on BBC One.
