A man has stirred a debate online, after he revealed that his girlfriend wants to name their baby after her ex-boyfriend.

And while this might be a dealbreaker in any relationship, there’s more the story, as the woman’s ex actually died.

“My girlfriend and I are expecting our first born son. The other night when discussing names, she said she would like his middle name to be that of her ex, who died,” the man wrote on Reddit.

“Saying further that it would mean a lot to his family who she is still close with.”

The man went on to say that it makes him feel ‘really uncomfortable’ and he doesn’t want to do it.

“I don’t want to tell people, especially my son, that he is partly named after another man who his mum loved before me,” the man continued.

“She said, ‘Why can’t you say he is named after my friend who died? We weren’t even together when he died’.

“I continued saying no to the name and that it feels pretty shitty to even be asked to name him that. Am I the a*****e?”

The internet was pretty divided on the matter, with some people saying it’s ‘weird’ and suggesting the man think about his girlfriend’s feelings.

“You don’t like that name for obvious reasons, and your girlfriend should respect that. How about picking a name from her family or yours?” one person commented.

“I understand that she may want to honour the name of her dead ex, but that’s her past and not yours. This is your son and you shouldn’t always think about her dead ex whenever you see the middle name of your son,” another person said.

Another person said: “I don’t think she’s unreasonable to suggest using her late friend’s name. Whether or not they were still together, he was someone who mattered to her. It’s no different than naming a child after a deceased relative – it’s a way to honour someone you loved.”
