Lupita Nyong’o shares Reese Witherspoon's genius career advice
She’s one of Hollywood’s most sought-after acting talents, but Lupita Nyong’o always makes time for one very important task in her increasingly hectic schedule.
Our November cover star revealed that it was fellow A-Lister, Reese Witherspoon, who imparted this vital piece of life advice that she now swears by.
Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar in the latest episode of our Life Lessons series – in which the 41-year-old shares her learnings on everything from style to confidence – Nyong'o revealed her top career tip. “This is very practical,” she said. “Reese Witherspoon advised me to always be the first to answer group emails.
“I think that’s great advice, because it means people will have to take you seriously as you’re quick to respond.”
That’s not to say that Nyong’o doesn’t get bogged down in life admin like the rest of us. The Wild Robot actress added that sometimes, the mundanity of day-to-day tasks saps her creativity.
“There’s a lot of administrative work, lots of emails to answer – dishes in the sink!” she laughs. “It can take away a lot of my vitality. So for me, creativity is something that I have to safeguard, I have to make time for it, and I have to be very deliberate.”
And while she does sometimes struggle with her confidence, Nyong’o stresses that feeling good within yourself is a skill we all have to continuously work at. “It’s not something that you have one day and then you have it forever,” she explains. “Your confidence will always be tried, and so it’s important to put in the work to keep it alive, keep it taut, keep it in play.”
