'I Love The Way My Nails Tell Their Own Story': Cynthia Erivo On Her Wicked Press Tour Nails
We are so invested with every part of the Wicked press tour. From Ariana and Cynthia's friendship, the method dressing for red carpets to the, ahem, on set romance, we cannot get enough and will be sad when it's over (although we are buzzing to see the film). But as beauty girlies, the one thing that has been giving us life is the consistent slay of Cynthia Erivo's nails. It is truly look after look courtesy of her nail techs.
So, given that we are completely invested in the talon creations for OPI Global Ambassador Cynthia, ahead of the European premiere we caught up with both nail tech Shea Osei, who has worked with the star for 15 years, and Cynthia herself, to chat all things nails...

How do you prep the nails pre premiere?
Shea - Firstly, I remove any old polish or nail art from previous looks. Then, I carefully push back and trim the cuticles to create a clean canvas. Maintaining Cynthia’s signature long coffin shape is a must, so I use a sharp file to refine the shape and follow up with buffing to smooth the surface for a flawless finish. Before sitting down with Cynthia, I usually have a clear vision of the design I want to create, ensuring we can achieve the perfect look efficiently.
Where does the nail look come into play when deciding on Cynthia’s red carpet outfits?
Shea - Cynthia’s nails are always a top priority for her red carpet appearances. Having worked with her for over 15 years, I know how integral her nail looks are to her overall style and confidence. They’re not an afterthought—they’re a statement piece that complements and elevates her outfits. The collaboration with Cynthia’s team has been seamless. We maintained close communication throughout the process, ensuring the nail design aligned perfectly with her wardrobe. I received the details of her outfit ahead of time, which was invaluable in planning a cohesive and eye-catching nail look. The result was a design that tied everything together beautifully and left a lasting impression.
Is each red carpet look for each premiere slated in one go or do you look at each one as they come?
Cynthia - I often will do initial fittings for upcoming appearances with my stylist, Jason Bolden, at one time. Then, we refine from there, focusing on each individual look. My nails are the statement accessory or punctuation mark to these looks. Many of the sets have been done late into the night prior to a premiere or full day of press. I love watching and learning from the nail artists I work with, letting them do what they do best.
What was the inspo for Cynthia’s hometown premiere look?
Shea - The inspiration came directly from her couture outfit. As soon as I saw the ensemble, I knew the color palette and design direction I wanted to take. The OPI x Wicked collection was a perfect match and played a major role in bringing the look to life.
How long do nails for the carpet take and does Cynthia keep them for post-premiere or remove?
Shea - Creating red carpet nails can take up to four hours, depending on the complexity of the design and details. Cynthia loves having her nails done and keeps them on after the premiere as part of her everyday look. It’s a signature aspect of her style. However, as an integral part of her style, it’s important to Cynthia that she have a unique set and look for each premiere moment.
Favourite nail look on the press tour so far and why?
Cynthia - It’s impossible to pick a favourite, but I will say these Wicked sets have been some of my favourite nails I’ve ever worn. Each manicure has been its own unique look, and within each set, there’s usually 10 individual styles of nails. The layers of colours, intricate details and embellishments have been incredible. I’ve felt empowered and glamourous. I’ve loved the way my nails are channelling Elphaba and how each look tells its own story.
