Former Love Island winner Amber Gill has opened up about her sexuality, saying that coming out was “a bit of a weird experience.” The star revealed that despite winning the ITV show in 2019 with male partner Greg O’Shea, it was “painfully obvious” she was gay.

Chatting on Timotei’s brand new podcast A Gentle Start: The Showercast, she said: "Sometimes I do take the odd opportunity to look back on when I was on Love Island, and it's quite a strange experience. I don't think I'm different as a person, but I think that the comparison between then and now is crazy.

"I feel like I'm way more confident and comfortable within myself, and I definitely didn't realise when I was there, but it's kind of painfully obvious when I watch it back now that there was something going on, I just couldn't figure out what it was.”

Amber, 27, came out in 2022, saying she’d “switched teams” on Twitter. While she was roundly applauded for her bravery in talking so openly about her sexuality, she admitted then it was “accidental” and an “off the cuff comment.” She says now, looking back, it was a ‘weird experience’ for it all to happen so publicly.

“I've embraced all of the opportunities and possibilities that have come my way,” she said on Showercast. “One of the biggest ones is probably my sexuality because that's something that I didn't really explore before, and then dealing with that in the public eye was a bit of a weird experience. I feel like it should be a personal experience - and it was a very public experience.”

Despite being open about her sexuality now, Amber is in no hurry to find a girlfriend or settle down anytime soon.

“I absolutely love single life,” she insists. “I'm a free bird. I can travel. I can climb mountains. I can rock climb. I can go all over the place. And nobody's asking me anything about anything. I don't get any ‘good morning’ texts, which I love. I hate a good morning text.”

But there are certain things Amber would like a woman around the house for. “The parts of my life that I would like to share are things like tidying the house and emptying and reloading the dishwasher,” she says.

“That's when I really wish I was in a relationship. But I think learning to be single and on my own has been one of the makings of my personality. You just get to develop and grow in so many ways when you don't have another human being distracting you.”

Designed to be listened to during your morning shower routine, the new five-part podcast Showercast features different celebrities each week, all sharing how they practice the growing wellness trend of gentle living in their everyday life.
