Surrey is one of the most hassle-free and idyllic places for a rural weekend trip from London, with certain parts just half an hour's train ride away. There's lots to see and do, too: you could visit the gorgeous Surrey Hills vineyards and sample delicious wines from the rolling North Downs, take a long ramble in ancient heathland, or explore miles of enchanting woodlands.

Pennyhill Park is an ivy-clad 18th-century manor house set in 120 acres of leafy Surrey parkland. The spa here has an incredible selection of swimming pools, one of which has underwater music and fibre optic lighting. Or there's the more traditional but equally relaxing outdoor tub where you can simply relax and sip champagne while soaking in the views. The thermal circuit includes experience showers, a tepidarium, laconium, and steam rooms.
The Latymer restaurant provides a superb culinary experience where you can learn about the provenance of the tasting menu's artistically presented dishes. Plus, there's croquet, tennis and a jogging track.
Great Fosters, Egham
There's history oozing from every creaking corridor at this former royal hunting lodge, Great Fosters. The walls are adorned with Flemish tapestries, and the grounds feature topiary and moated gardens.
There are 50 acres of grounds in total, where one of the highlights is a romantic Saxon moat with a romantic Japanese bridge. There's Michelin-starred, formal dining in the Tudor Pass restaurant - the intense flavour of the scallop in a tomato, watermelon and kaffir lime tea is a particular favourite of ours.
For an extra-indulgent stay, opt for one of the historic bedrooms lavishly kitted out with Italian Rococo and Renaissance furniture - you'll feel like you're staying in a palace.
Langshott Manor, Horley
A timber-framed Tudor country house hotel with three acres of pristine gardens, Langshott Manor combines historic features with home-from-home comforts and luxury flourishes.
Decorative fireplaces and beamed ceilings nod to the building's 16th-century origins, while bold, contemporary furnishings are featured elsewhere. Afternoon Tea by the pond is unmissable: enjoy warm, soft, and yummy scones fresh from the oven while watching the ducks swim by.
White Horse, Dorking
Set in a 13th-century coaching inn, this historic gastropub is perfect for a cosy mini break away with great food. We love the White Horse's plush upholstery in the interiors, and there are dog-friendly rooms if you can't bear to part with your pooch for the weekend.
A smart move is planning your visit to land on a Sunday to take full advantage of the Sunday roast. There's also an excellent veggie option finished with truffled artichoke pesto. Delish.
Woodlands Park Hotel, Cobham
Another hotel with a rich history, this country house was once the location of many an Edwardian house party, with guests including Edward VII.
Nowadays, Woodlands Park Hotel has a more relaxed atmosphere. Guests can enjoy afternoon tea in the oak-panelled Grand Hall, with its gleaming stained-glass ceiling, or take a stroll on nearby Esher Common, a pretty woodland area.
Back at the hotel, you can kick back with a cocktail on the terrace overlooking the gardens and 10 acres of landscaped grounds.
The Mitre, Hampton Court
A great choice for anyone hoping to explore historic Hampton Court Palace, The Mitre is a remarkably swift walk from the main entrance of the Tudor gem. This Grade II-listed riverside landmark was originally built in 1665 for King Charles II's courtiers and is now a colourful boutique hotel with a country house feel.
The hotel enjoys a prime riverfront location, and you can head out to the terraces in the sunshine for delicious dining and dreamy drinks. For an extra special stay you can book the Henry VIII suite, named after Hampton Court's most famous former resident, and relax in a roll-top copper bath and four-poster bed.
Fairmont Windsor Park, Windsor
If you're looking to swap the hustle and bustle of the city for pure bucolic bliss, then Fairmont Windsor Park is the address for you. Located just an hour from central London, this 250-room hotel is immersed in acres of stunning countryside near Egham and just a stone's throw from Windsor Great Park, Savill Gardens and the iconic Castle.

The grounds at Wotton House in Dorking are truly special. They boast England's first Italian garden, created by botanist John Evelyn. You can even take a stroll after sunset, when parts of the garden are illuminated, creating a truly romantic atmosphere.

Gorse Hill Hotel, Woking
Built in 1912, Gorse Hill in Woking was once the home of a number of colourful Edwardian characters and was designed by Edward Warren, an architect known for his work on parts of Oxford University.
Nowadays this elegant mansion offers a relaxed and intimate atmosphere for guests looking to explore Surrey's natural beauty. It's in a wonderfully peaceful location surrounded by green gardens, yet only a few minutes from the centre of Woking. Dine in the stylish brasserie and you can enjoy modern classic dishes such as glazed confit duck leg and oriental-style salmon.

Hand and Spear, Weybridge
What was once a 1830s Young's pub has been transformed into an eccentric boutique hotel at the Hand and Spear. Inside, you'll find retro artefacts, plant-filled terrariums, and Secret Garden wallpaper.
Located right next to Weybridge train station, you can reach this boutique bolthole from central London in 30 minutes - ideal for a last-minute getaway.
While here, you could easily spend time snuggled away in the rooms, enjoying the bespoke décor, freestanding copper baths and sash windows. Make sure to head down to the restaurant, where you'll find relaxed, hearty gastro-pub food made with seasonal ingredients.
The Stag on the River, Eashing
In a gorgeous setting on the banks of the River Wey, The Stag is an atmospheric red-brick village pub and B&B combining seven cosy, chic rooms with original 17th-century features, such as exposed beams, with locally sourced, seasonal food and drink.
Summer is a great time to stay and eat here, with seating on the patio or in the pub pretty pub garden, although you can eat outdoors all year round thanks to the heated gazebos, or the interior entices with its crackling fires.
Foxhills, Ottershaw
A vast country estate within striking distance of London, Foxhills includes five pools (indoor and outdoor), three golf courses, a spa, and three restaurants. Its raft of more than 200 activities across the week includes yoga in the dedicated cabin and orienteering.
Holder of multiple accolades, including Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence 2023 for its family amenities (which include a dedicated pavilion for them), it has only 66 routes and suites, all spacious, individually decorated and scattered across the estate in locations including a cobbled courtyard and woodland spots.
Brooklands Hotel & Spa, Weybridge
A unique contemporary property with views down over the race tracks of Mercedes Benz World, including from its Super Suites with their expansive decked terraces, Brooklands is also a popular spot for a pampering break, with a cutting-edge spa complete with a Sunlight Therapy Room, hydrotherapy hot tub, and meditation room with heated waterbeds.
Meanwhile, its 1907 restaurant, bar and grill (named after the year the iconic nearby Brooklands racetrack, now a museum and vintage car show venue) was inspired by the golden age of racing in the 1920s and 1930s.
Hurtwood Hotel, Peaslake
Between Gatwick Airport and Guildford yet on the doorstep of fantastic walking and cycling country (with e-bike hire available), the Hurtwood is a village retreat with rooms and a cottage soothingly decorated in neutral hues – one with a four-poster bed and some with sofabeds for families.
