What is Mr Burton about?
Set in 1942 in Port Talbot, Mr Burton follows a young Richard Jenkins (played by Industry star Harry Lawtey) before he took on the famous name of Richard Burton.
A rebellious schoolboy from a struggling family, Richard’s life changes when his teacher, Philip Burton (Toby Jones), spots his talent for drama.
Philip not only becomes his mentor but even gives him his own surname, guiding him on the path to stardom with the help of Ma Smith (Lesley Manville), his landlady and confidante, who acts as a guiding force for young Richard.
The official synopsis reads: "Mr. Burton tells the true story of the relationship between Welsh schoolmaster Philip Burton and a wild young schoolboy called Richard Jenkins.
"The latter dreamed of becoming an actor, but his ambitions were in danger of being derailed by a combination of family trouble, the pressure of war, and his own lack of discipline.
"Mr. Burton recognised the raw talent in his pupil, and made it his mission to fight for him, becoming his tutor, strict taskmaster and eventually his adoptive father."
