Stitch a cute knitted headband with our video tutorial

What better way to dress up an outfit than with a handmade accessory? Knitted headbands are a great way to wow your friends with your knitting skills whilst also being practical and looking stylish.

If you're looking for a knit pattern for a headband, our quick and easy version means you can make more than one knitted headband from a single ball of super bulky weight yarn, and in next to no time at all.

Knitted in stocking stitch, we've added a slipped-stitch edging to stop your knitted headband from curling at the edges, which stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row), is prone to doing.

Add a professional finish by hand washing your finished item and allowing to dry flat, or gently steaming to crisp up any curly bits. Make sure to aways consult your yarn label for guidance on how to press or block your finished knits.

If you’d prefer a headband knitting pattern without the twist at the front-centre, by all means go for it – simply omit the cable stitch halfway along. But don’t be put off by adding a stylish twist to your knitted headband, our easy cable stitch tutorial has got you covered if you haven’t tried this technique before.

Headband patterns can vary in difficulty, but this one is quick and easy to make, whereas one in a DK weight yarn or finer, would take a lot longer. You can make our headband in an afternoon, even if you’re a beginner. And to make it even more straightforward, check out our video tutorial above.

Customising your headband

If you want to turn your headband into a slightly wider design so that it can also be used in winter as a headband and ear warmer combo it's really easy to do! When casting on add some additional stitches, we'd suggest an extra five to eight stitches depending on how much you want to increase the width.

Want to add your own special touch to the design? Why no swap your knitting needles for a crochet hook and whip up a little crochet flower embellishment that can be stitched on to the headband.

If you want to get extra fancy, make two crochet flowers in the same colour wool but slightly different sizes. Stack them together so that the larger one is on the bottom and secure in place onto the headband through the middle with yellow thread or wool to create a 3D flower effect.

How to hide the seam

One of the best ways to sew up any of your hand knits, no matter what they are, is by using a technique known as mattress stitch.

It gives a flawless, seamless look on the right-side of your work while keeping chunky seams at the reverse of your work to a minimum. It’s a particularly effective sewing-up method for any patterned projects, such as those where you need to line up stripes or hide the seam.

The last thing you want after working so hard on your headband knitting pattern is an unsightly join, so make sure to follow our video tutorial above for a seamless, professional finish.
