Laura Whitmore reveals why she loved marrying husband Iain Stirling in secret
She announced on New Year's Day that she had wed long-term boyfriend Iain Stirling at Dublin City Hall.
Now, Laura Whitmore has revealed that marrying secretly, in a small, private ceremony, allowed her and her husband to choose their exact, preferred guest list.
Speaking to The Telegraph's Stella magazine, the TV presenter, 35, joked when asked if she fretted about who to include on her big day: "I mean, I’m Irish so, unless the whole country comes to the wedding..."
She added: "It worked out in our favour as a lot of people assumed we did it small because of COVID."
Whitmore explained that it turned out precisely as they would have wished for in normal times, noting: "We knew a year ago, pre-pandemic, what we wanted to do and we were lucky that we were able to do exactly what we wanted."
They are understood to have tied the knot in November, but didn't publicly confirm their union until early last month on Instagram with a picture that gave the first look at the Love Island host's white trouser suit by British designer Joshua Kane.
Whitmore explained that she and her other half – the 33-year-old comedian best known as the ITV dating show's voiceover – had been planning to keep the ceremony entirely under wraps.
She said that they only decided to confirm it to "thank" the "people with good intentions" who had been congratulating them online ever since The Sun ran a story after getting hold of their marriage certificate.
Whitmore – who presented the South Africa edition of Love Island in early 2020 – met her other half at an ITV party in 2016, and the couple became secretly betrothed on 1 January last year.
Marking their engagement anniversary with the wedding announcement, the presenter wrote: “A year ago Iain asked me to marry him and we had the most magical, perfect ceremony.”
In December, they also revealed on Instagram that they were expecting their first child.
Sharing a picture of a Guns N’ Roses babygro, the mother-to-be wrote: “I’m gonna be honest it’s starting to look like my lockdown beer belly is out of control.
“Iain and I are expecting a baby early 2021. It’s been hard to keep such happy news quiet.
“Especially the times when I’ve had to run out of live radio to get sick in a bin or my penchant for a bowl of mashed potato in the morning. I wasn’t hungover like everyone thought.”
Whitmore recently revealed that things haven’t always been perfect between the newlyweds – but that they got over their last big fight with some unlikely help.
Speaking on Chris and Rosie Ramsey’s hit podcast, Sh**ged Married Annoyed, she explained that their show had “saved our relationship” during a long car journey.
