Kristin Davis has opened up about how she was affected by comments focusing on her weight during filming for the original Sex and the City TV series.

The 56-year-old actress – who plays Charlotte in the show – recalled her "stress" at discussions about her body shape, which included being frequently described as "pear-shaped".

She told The Sunday Times' Style magazine: "They would write articles every week about how I was 'pear-shaped', which I didn’t feel was a compliment at the time.

"It would stress me out a fair amount because I couldn’t avoid it. I kind of feel like that’s how it is now too."

Davis also noted her "shock" that when the trailer for new show And Just Like That was released there were discussions among social media trolls about how she and co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon had aged.

She said: "Everyone wants to comment, pro or nay or whatever, on our hair and our faces and our this and our that. The level of intensity of it was a shock."

Davis claimed the paparazzi put great effort into "trying to get bad pictures" while the trio were filming.

She added: "I feel angry and I don’t want to feel angry all the time, so I don’t look at it, I just know it’s there."

The original series of Sex and the City ran from 1998 to 2004, with two films released in 2008 and 2010.

This month has seen the release of the latest instalment, And Just Like That, in which the character of Samantha – famously played by Kim Cattrall – has been written out.

Davis, who is mother to two young children through adoption, described being back on set as "very thrilling and very emotional".

When asked about whether Cattrall's absence was weird, she said: "Not really, no. We haven’t been together in a long time."
