King Charles III is officially taking on another big role—one that once belonged to his youngest son, Prince Harry.

The sovereign today announced he will be the next Captain General of the Royal Marines— an honorary military role that Harry held for three years, from 2017 to 2020.

The title previously belonged to Prince Philip, but Queen Elizabeth II passed it on to Harry in December 2017. But when the Duke of Sussex stepped down as a senior member of the royal family in 2020, he was stripped of his royal titles.

At the time, there was much speculation about who would get the honor next, with many thinking it would be Princess Anne, who has held a number of military titles.

"Today as the @RoyalMarines celebrate their 358th birthday, The King has become their new Captain General. His Majesty trained and served alongside the Royal Marines during his Naval career," the royal family wrote on Twitter today.

"I feel greatly honoured to become part of the Corps Family and very much look forward to meeting many of you in the near future. In the meantime, this comes with my heartfelt and special wishes for a very happy 358th birthday," read a statement from King Charles. He added the Royal Marines' motto, "Per Mare, Per Terram," Latin for "By sea, By land."

The Royal Marines were formed during the reign of King Charles II, on October 28, 1664.

"On our 358th birthday, it is my honour to welcome King Charles III as our Captain General. Happy Birthday to all Royal Marines," the Commandant General of the Royal Marines, Lieutenant General Robert Magowan, wrote on Twitter.

King Charles's announcement comes one day after Prince Harry unveiled the news of his upcoming memoir, titled Spare. The much awaited book will be released on January 10, 2023.
