It is officially cold in New York City, which means that it's time for Katie Holmes's street style looks to shine. The actress's wardrobe has transitioned from breezy fall layered looks into more heavy duty jackets and bulkier pieces, but I'm never mad at a very good coat.

For the Dawson Creek actress's latest stroll around the city, she was spotted in another cozy look, this time, it was a shearling coat that shielded her against the elements. Holmes's long, shin-length jacket was made of a leathery black fabric that was complemented by a fuzzy cream-colored lining and collar for a luxurious twist. The shearling also acted as trim around the pockets, sleeves, and hem of the coat.

The 45-year-old completed the look with several closet staples, opting for dark brown tortoise shell printed glasses, a chocolate brown shoulder bag, tailored black pants, and sleek leather booties to complete the ensemble. And for extra warmth, Holmes carried a cup of Starbucks coffee—a vanilla latte, according to my investigative journalism (a.k.a. I zoomed in).

The jacket's larger-than-life shearling moment gave a nod to Penny Lane from the 2000 cult classic film, Almost Famous, starring Kate Hudson in her breakthrough role. Lane's iconic outfit featured a knee length jacket that had a white shaggy trim around the wrists and collar, which she paired with a tiny white lace crop top, low rise bell bottom jeans, and periwinkle blue sunglasses.

The coat, however, is far from the first jacket to emerge from Holmes's wardrobe this season. On December 1, her choice of outerwear was a long black teddy bear sherpa, which almost concealed her winter white outfit.
