I’ve spent the last week in the most chaotic clothing. Whenever I travel home for the holidays, I wear whatever I have there—my suitcase en route to Minnesota is typically full of presents, with zero space to pack clothes for me to wear. So, I mix and match whatever I can find, partly from my mom’s closet and partly from my college pickings. Katie Holmes’s recent Broadway outing had similar vibes, IMO.
On December 22, Holmes did what so many New Yorkers probably did—she went to see a matinee Broadway show, because as the city starts to sleep for the holidays (does it ever really, though?), nothing beats seeing a show. For said outing, Holmes was honestly channeling theater vibes in an eclectic outfit that was full of so many of her favorite things. Think: big bags, big pants, Mary Jane flats!
Holmes re-wore pants she had on earlier in the day—a pair of brown, wide-leg barrel-leg jeans that sat low on the waist and had all the volume from the knees down. The tan (err, caramel?) wash was something I haven’t seen in a while, with a faded center that reminded me of early aughts denim. She paired said bottoms with a double-breasted wool peacoat and matching red accessories, including a paperboy cap, scarf, and velvet Mary Janes. The finishing touch? A large black leather tote bag. So yes, she wore all of her favorite things.

Holmes is known for wearing Mary Janes all the time, but come winter, she’s been playing favorites with velvet options that seem a bit more sensible for this time of year. What’s more, she styled her most recent red ballerinas with what appeared to be white knit socks, a cute and functional style trick that prolongs the wearability of your go-to warm-weather styles.
Big, baggy pants and equally big, roomy totes are nothing new for the actress, either. She’s been a fan of both for years now, and frankly, I appreciate that she sticks to her tried-and-trues. Seeing as there’s so much out there, it’s easy to want to try it all, but honestly not feasible. Find your favorites like Holmes, and make those yours.
