Kate Middleton makes a surprise appearance at the ballet as she begins return to royal duties
The Princess of Wales made an unexpected, low-key appearance at the English National Ballet last Thursday. It was her second public outing since she revealed that she had completed chemotherapy in a poignant video on 10 September after being diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer.
The 42-year-old attended a performance of Giselle at Sadler's Wells in London. While no photos have been released, the princess shared a heartfelt, personal message on The Prince and Princess of Wales' Instagram Stories.
'Congratulations and thank you to @englishnationalballet and @sadlers_wells for the wonderfully powerful, moving and inspiring performance of Akram Khan's Giselle. Creativity at its best! C', she wrote.
Kate's first post-chemo appearance came the weekend prior, when she joined the Prince of Wales, the King and Queen Camilla at Crathie Kirk Church in Balmoral for Sunday Service. On Tuesday she also held a meeting on her annual Christmas carol service with representatives at Windsor Castle, a key event in the royal calendar. Held at Westminster Abbey, it will be broadcast later this year on ITV.
These events and appearances, which have all been noted in the Court Circular - the official listing of the previous day's royal events - are a reassuring sign she is recovering well and cements her gradual return to royal duties, which she referenced in the video. She said that she would be 'looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months' while 'doing what I can to stay cancer-free'.
She is also expected to observe the National Service of Remembrance on 10 November for Remembrance Sunday, joining members of the royal family at the Cenotaph, though that will be decided closer to the time.
Former royal butler Paul Burrell has suggested to The Express that the princess may attend the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace in early December, another key royal event where the royal family officially welcome members of the Diplomatic Corps in the palace's State Rooms.
Burrell, who was in service to Princess Diana until her death in 1997, called the occasion 'the biggest night of the year for the royals, where every room of Buckingham Palace is used and every diplomat in London attends.'
We wish the princess a healthy, speedy recovery and hope she returns to other in-person events before the new year.
