Kate Ferdinand has shared the sex of her baby, but admitted the gender reveal within the family didn't go exactly to plan.

Speaking on Wednesday's episode of her podcast Blended, with this week's guest, her husband Rio, the couple discussed the news, and the comical "bedlam" of the day they found out.

"I said it was going to be this from the beginning," said Rio on the gender, before Kate chimed in mockingly, "This is what bugs me, and I love you so much, but it's 50/50, and we both guessed the same... but because you guessed, you 'knew'. But I also guessed that."

She then confirmed, "It's a girl guys, we're so excited."

"I wanted a girl as well," added Rio. "I knew it was a girl but I actually wanted a girl. I wanted girls at the beginning, I wanted Cree to be a boy."

The couple welcomed their first child, son Cree, in December 2020. Kate is also stepmother to Rio's three children from his late wife: Lorenz, 16, Tate, 14, and Tia, 11.

Kate and Rio then addressed that they needed to talk about the events that unfolded with the gender reveal too, both laughing.

"It was a typical Ferdinand household gender reveal, it went wrong," Rio said candidly.

"It was bedlam," added Kate. "So we all had a cake, there was 12 cakes...only one of them had the colour in it. We all had two cakes each, little cupcakes.

"All the kids are so many different ages, it's really hard to get something that works for everyone."

With Rio home late at 8pm due to 'traffic' they said Cree was already exhausted, meaning they were already starting the night a "little groggy".

Rio continued, "We all sat down, cameras ready to film it for memories, and then we all take a bite of the first six cupcakes and not one of them has the colour.

"So it's pink or blue, girl or boy. And then we're all shouting...and because everyone's shouting so loud Cree in the middle just goes [makes crying noise], starts crying because he was scared, hysterical crying."

They then explained how everyone calmed down, before Kate brought up another key component to the story.

The day before, Tate and Tia said they thought Lorenz was going to get the coloured cake, because they think Lorenz is the favourite child (which she told them wasn't true).

"I proved it was not a fix, they all picked their own cake...who gets the cake with the colour in it?" Lorenz, of course. "So now everyone thinks it's a fix."

After some other mishaps, Rio then explained, "Kate decided to take the spotlight and choke on the cupcake".

"I was so excited it was a girl," explained Kate. "I hadn't swallowed the bit of cake, but then Cree started screaming, so I went over to see him and then the cake got stuck in my throat. Can I just add, not one family member cared."

"You're on another planet," she added, speaking to Rio. "I was full-blown choking, someone was having to hit me over the back, and I had no drink."

However, despite the series of unfortunate events, the parents said the family was all so excited, especially Tia who can't believe she's finally getting another girl in the family.
