Jon Batiste Brings NFL Players to Tears with Moving National Anthem
The Super Bowl is finally here, but before the Kansas City Chiefs took the field to play the Philadelphia Eagles, viewers and players were treated to a special rendition of the National Anthem by Jon Batiste.
As a Louisiana native, it's only fitting that Jon was tapped to perform "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Super Dome in New Orleans. The 38-year-old Grammy winner is best known for being the bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and he's the composer behind the Pixar animated movie Soul.
Jon performed the National Anthem in front of a rapt audience, and Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones was moved to tears. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appeared emotional.
Jon wore an all-black suit and played a vibrantly painted piano. The performance ended with a flyover by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Jon isn't the only musician featured during the game. Kendrick Lamar will perform at halftime, Lauren Daigle and Trombone Shorty performed "God Bless America," Ledisi sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Lady Gaga and Harry Connick, Jr., both performed in the pre-game show.
