Joey King debuted the ultimate hair transformation at the Cannes Film Festival, retiring her signature blonde lengths in favour of a sophisticated vintage "Prada bob". The actress, who celebrated the premiere of La Plus Precieuse des Marchandises this weekend, presented the statement cut on the final red carpet of the festival.

Characterised by its sleek, blunt shape and delicate cheek-grazing curl, the actress' latest alternate takes dramatic inspiration from the iconic 1920s flapper bob. Once referred to as the "Dutch Bob" or "Page Boy Bob", the ever classic hairdo first arrived on the Hollywood scene via silent films, worn by the likes of Louise Brooks, Colleen Moore and Mary Thurman. Embellished with a minimalist hair slide, King's updated styling retains the uniformity and length of the vintage crop but does away with it's trademark graphic fringe. This is what makes the preppy "Prada bob" – as coined by celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos.

King completed her red carpet ensemble with a buttermilk bow-embellished Miu Miu gown and a maximalist pair of rhinestone adorned mesh gloves. A clashing combination of the effortless and the extravagant, the We Were the Lucky Ones star's styling is a thorough lesson in vintage referencing.

The unexpected hair transformation is the latest in a string of red carpet bob debuts this season. From Gigi Hadid's departure from her Californian supermodel waves, to Elle Fanning's versatile shoulder-length cut, this year's award season provided ample cases for braving the chop before summer. A mere glance at the star-studded carpets of 2024 will prove that a simple bob needn't be restrictive; from flipped ends and subtle beehives, to hydro texure and choppy layers, the chin-length crops we see today are chic, modern and leave generous room to experiment and play.
