Jean Paul Gaultier is the latest designer to ban the use of fur from his collections after he announced his decision live on French television.

The fashion legend said that the way in which animals are killed for the fur for fashion was “absolutely deplorable”.

He joins other fashion houses in eliminating fur from their collections, including Gucci, Versace, Galliano, Armani, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Vivienne Westwood and Stella McCartney.

Mimi Bekhechi, PETA Director of International Programmes, said: “This decision is a sign of changed times, as most people no longer wish to wear anything from animals who were cruelly caged, electrocuted, bludgeoned to death or caught in steel traps, left to die slowly and painfully–the way coyotes are still being killed for the trim on Canada Goose jackets."

“Fur today is as dead as the poor animals it was stolen from, and any designers not clued up enough to see that may as well hang up their sewing needles now.”

The news of a fur ban follows long-standing pressure from PETA on the French designer. A PETA protester famously stormed on the catwalk of the brand's show in March 2003, at which point the designer’s assistant threw a fur blanket over the activist.

Other luxury fashion brands such as Fendi, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs still openly use fur in their collections, according to the the Independent.
