It turns out that if you’ve brought a red and black check shirt from a charity shop in Camberwell over the last few years, you may be in ownership of Happy Valley villain Tommy Lee Royce's on-screen threads.

This TV drama artefact was donated by the man who played him, James Norton, as he explains to Esquire in the latest episode of Lookbook.

While the button-down got the boot, most of his on-screen looks have remained in his wardrobe (the McMafia suits get an honourable mention).

For his newest film, Joy – which explains the story of how IVF was invented – Norton got to work with costume designer and drama school friend, Sinéad Kidao, whom he modelled for as part of her university project.

The 39-year-old also explains what it was like wearing his birthday suit during Hanya Yanagihara’s theatre adaptation of A Little Life – another role that obviously got a lot of people talking – which, also had some exquisite bespoke tailoring from Hermès.

Despite a newfound appreciation for being unclad, Norton is a big fan of clothes. As shown by the love he has for the get-up he wore to the Giorgio Armani spring/summer ’23 show, and his red carpet outfit for the Little Women premiere. Don’t expect to find them in an South London Oxfam anytime soon.

'Joy' is available in cinemas from 15 November, and to stream on Netflix from 22 November.
