The Internet Can't Get Enough Of This *Major* Nail Trend
As new nail trends emerge, you may have noticed an uptick in interest in jelly nails, which tend to have a transparent color, topped with a super shiny top coat. And TBH, it makes total sense—not only are they super chic, but it's also a fun way to mix up your look without adding time to your nail appointments, according to nail technician Saroya Owens.
"This originated in Japan and Korea, combining 3D art with jelly colors, giving the nails even more of a textured appearance," she explains. "Depending on the amount of layers applied, this look can go from transparent to translucent." Some alternative names for jelly nails include glass, crystal, and mirror nails.
The great thing about jelly nails is that they can also be done from the comfort of your own home, as many brands sell jelly polish. However, you can make any polish "jelly" by adding color to a gel or lacquer topcoat and then shaking the mixture. If you buy ready-to-wear jelly polish, simply apply one to three layers. "The more coats you apply, the more the color builds so that your polish will appear less transparent," says Owens. "This look can be done on fake and natural nails and with regular or gel polish."
