Inside the A-list 'Modern Marilyn' fashion trend sweeping this year's Oscars and how wear it
We're calling it - this year's Oscars ceremony and after parties were all about the 'Modern Marilyn' trend, so here's what it is and how you can wear it too.
For the 2025 awards season, white dresses in classic silhouettes were all the rage on the red carpet, with celebrities including Lupito Nyong'o, Raye, Kim Kardashian and Lindsey Lohan all embracing the look.
The trend involves a fresh take on a vintage cut of a white dress, reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe's iconic, old Hollywood aesthetic.
Raye and Lindsey Lohan went for understated and elegant looks featuring square necklines, as they arrived for the Vanity Fair after party on Sunday (2 March).
Others channelled the classic Marilyn aesthetic with a full, strapless gown featuring gathered detailing, such as Kim Kardashian in a custom Balenciaga gown, and Chrissy Teigen in a floor-sweeping satin number.
Draping can also give the traditional white dress a unique take, for instance Penelope Cruz's look had a Grecian feel, while Jodie Turner-Smith managed to look both classic and modern with her striking draped silhouette.
And, taking the classic look a step further, Lupita Nyong'o and Julia Garner introduced texture through feathers. Lupita elevated her ensemble with a gradual fade to black of her bejewelled gown while Julia, pairing her own outfit with vintage waves and a red lip, kept her feeling firmly Marilyn.
GH fashion director Melanie Rickey says, "This trend suits everyone because it draws the eye to the neck and clavicle – and we all know the golden rules – always highlight the slimmest part of your body."
Most recently, we saw Pamela Anderson channel the modern Marilyn trend with a paired back beauty look on the red carpet last month, and now it appears the look is out in force.
According to Melanie, there are two things to consider to successfully re-create this look, she says "The first, choose a shade of white that works with your skin tone. Brilliant white can be quite harsh.
"Second, exposing skin at your neck and decolletage - whether you go for an off-the-shoulder, a V-neck, or decorative styles - it brightens the face, and creates a radiant glow up."
