Inside Casualty Nicole Piper star’s life – ‘magical’ wedding to 'joke' real name
To fans of BBC drama Casualty, actress Sammy T Dobson will be instantly recognisable as Nicole Piper. She appeared in the role just last year and has already had a whirlwind, both on and off screen.
The Geordie star, whose character in the show is a junior doctor, has captivated the nation since she first appeared in the long running show last March. Her character has taken on big storylines, leading to life-changing decisions.
Sammy, 38, once starred in hit children's drama Byker Grove, but she's still new to the limelight that Casualty brings, and while she’s been tackling hard-hitting storylines, from surrogacy to friendship struggles, her private life has also been transforming.

Just as Sammy’s role as Nicole Piper began in 2024, so did her new role at home – as a wife. The actress surprised fans back in June with a picture on her Instagram (@sammytinks) showing her walking down the aisle and the caption: "I got married yesterday. And it was magical."
She went on: “Thank you so much to everyone who came and made it such a fun and joyous day. Thank you to everyone for all of their help in making it happen. And thank you to @chhappy for saying yes.”
She and her man, Chappy, tied the knot in Sammy's hometown, Newcastle, and held an intimate ceremony at Summerhill Bowling Club Pavilion & Gardens.
Messages from fans came flooding in, including comments from her Casualty co-stars. Melanie Hill, who plays Siobhan McKenzie alongside Sammy, wrote: "What a special day- congratulations to you two lovebirds xx."
After the announcement, the soap star told What to Watch: “This time last year I didn’t have a job, and I wasn’t even engaged! It’s hard to get my head around, but it’s just the best!”
Horror accident
Despite her exciting year, Sammy has also faced some serious challenges, which she spoke openly about before appearing on the hit TV show.
When initially starring in Casualty, her character Nicole was involved in a surrogate storyline, involving her friend Rosie who was left paralysed after a serious car accident the two pals were in.
What the producers of the show didn’t know at the time was that this plot deeply resonated with Sammy, who back in 2010 survived a terrible car accident herself.
The crash left the actor with a broken thigh bone, torn-off eyelid, and significant facial damage. Not only this, but Sammy was left in a wheelchair for three months and thought she would have to say goodbye to her acting career for good.
She previously told The Mirror: “It felt so bizarre that I had lost my career because of a car accident and then I was being brought in as a character who'd had one. When they initially told me, 'You've been in a car crash,' my instant reaction was, 'How did you know?' But they were talking about my character, Nicole, rather than me!"
Reflecting on the incident, Sammy described the moment her face smashed through the window as she pressed down on the brakes and how it took emergency responders 90 minutes to free her from the wreckage.
"I just saw headlights right in front of me," she said, recalling the crash. "I tried to swerve to get out of his way, but he swerved the same way, so he hit my car at well over 50mph, and it flipped over into an adjacent field," reports OK!
In defiance of her trauma, Sammy was determined to get back on her feet and began doing stand-up comedy, which led her to perform in pantomimes and appear in numerous TV comedies before landing the role as Nicole.
She told The Mirror: “It came out of nowhere... I was so happy, even the commute from my home in Northumberland to the studios in Cardiff didn’t matter. The irony is that when my friends saw pictures after my crash, they used to say, ‘You look like you could be in Casualty. What an incredible surprise to be able to say now I am in Casualty!”
Early career and comedy
Although her primetime career is only just getting started, Sammy is no stranger to our screens, having made her TV debut on Byker Grove during the mid-2000s as Sarah Young.
The kids’ BBC drama, set in Newcastle, helped kickstart careers for British TV stars including Ant and Dec as well as Sammy but sadly came to an end in 2006 after its launch in 1989.
It was after her car accident that the actor, at age 23, turned to comedy and began performing in and around Newcastle, where she’s from. This later on led her to host her own podcast in 2016, Which Is The Best? alongside comedian Lee Kyle.
Ahead of her comedy career, the actress was no stranger to a joke, having grown up in a family who apparently liked a laugh. She revealed in an interview with What to Watch that the ‘T’ in her name actually stands for Tinkerbell!
Revealing the story behind her quirky middle name, she said: “That’s my parents' idea of a hilarious joke! They found out that as parents, they can change your name legally until you’re 18 without you having any say. So, on the eve of my 18th birthday, they changed my name by deed poll by putting Tinkerbell as my middle name!”
Sammy reveals her humour by often sharing funny and sometimes gruesome behind-the-scenes pictures on the set of Casualty. It’s clear that throughout it all, she finds moments of light-hearted joy in this whirlwind, as fans of the BBC drama anticipate what Nicole Piper does next.
