Inside the Atelier: Léa Seydoux's shimmering Cannes Film Festival gown
When you see a gown on the red carpet, its easy to admire the finished product – the way that it's worn, or how it catches the light under the flashbulbs – but much harder to understand or appreciate the craftsmanship behind the couture. In our Inside the Atelier series, we explore exactly how some of the most impressive luxury pieces are made, and celebrate the work behind the masterpiece.
Léa Seydoux was one of the stars to attend the grand opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival this week, and did so in a shimmering custom design by Louis Vuitton, the fashion house for which she's been an ambassador since 2016. The actress, who is attending the festival to promote her new movie, Le Deuxième Acte ("The Second Act"), walked the iconic Croisette carpet in a tulle bustier gown fully embroidered with silver sequins and delicate blue crystal beads. The bespoke dress, which featured a geometric-shaped décolleté, took more than 350 hours of work to complete, plus 1500 hours of meticulous hand embroidery.
The actress completed her look with a white and yellow gold, sapphire and diamond necklace by Louis Vuitton high jewellery – from the Deep Time 'Fossils' collection – combined with a matching white gold and diamond ring.
"What I’ve learned about style over the years is that it’s not something that you can learn – I think it's more something that you have or not," Seydoux told us in her recent Harper's Bazaar cover interview, adding that dressing for the red carpet can often make her feel "vulnerable". She went on to praise the work of Louis Vuitton's creative director. "Nicolas Ghesquière reinvented the modern woman," she said. "He created his own style and language that’s futuristic and romantic."
