IHOP x Lay’s Rooty Tooty Fresh 'N Fruity Is Only Available at 1 Grocery Store for a Limited Time

And TikTokers have strong feelings about it.

<p>Lay

Lay's

Whoever runs the Lay’s Instagram account loves to post Photoshops of fake bags of potato chips, teasing us with nonexistent flavors like Korean corn dog, butternut squash soup, or watermelon. So when the Lay’s account posted about a collaboration with IHOP a couple of weeks ago, it seemed like it could’ve been just another joke.

“Two icons: Lay' [and] IHOP’s Rooty Tooty Fresh 'N Fruity combo,” the caption read. “Would you try this fake flavor, or… is it fake?”

Some people went full Sherlock, trying to decide whether or not Lay’s was being serious this time. “When [Lay’s] puts out fake flavors they are very clear... but here they said this ‘Would you try this fake flavor, or… is it fake,’” the popular Snackolator account wrote. “And look at the packaging — they put more work into this than normal fake flavors, integrating the [IHOP] logo all over the packaging. This is happening.”

The truth is: It’s happening. Earlier this week, Lay’s confirmed that the Lay’s x IHOP Rooty Tooty Fresh ‘N Fruity chips will be available exclusively at Walmart stores. And as of this writing, a 2 ⅝- ounce bag is listed for $2.48 on Walmart.com.)

So, how do they taste? According to Nation’s Restaurant News, the flavor is described as having a hint of strawberry and maple syrup sweetness combined with savory bacon. The IHOP-inspired seasoning mix was created through a collaboration between Frito-Lay’s research and development teams and IHOP’s head chef, Arthur Carl.

Some Instagram commenters had mixed feelings about the chips. Their reactions ranged from “I’m excited to try this” to “don’t ruin something I love,” although they didn’t clarify whether they meant the potato chips or the Rooty Tooty Fresh & Fruity pancake stack. A couple of cynics suggested that the flavor would be “a product fail” or “one of those things you buy once and then never again.”

A few TikTokers have already posted their reviews of the flavor, and they seem to be…unimpressed. “It’s heavy on the weird strawberry flavor,” @ohnoitsdanicaa explained, after taking her first bite. “As you keep chewing, you definitely get the pancake. Then the aftertaste, you get the bacon.” Ariel of @ariel.snackandshopwithme had a more visceral reaction, and couldn’t even finish one chip. “The taste, I can’t even explain it,” she said in a recent TikTok post. “Salty, strawberry, you definitely get that bacon in there [...] I hate it.”

But Natalie of @natalieandtara didn’t mind them. “The flavors are really really good,” she said in a TikTok review. “I’m not gonna lie, this is actually pretty good.”

If you love them, then you’d better stock up because these chips will only be available for a limited time. If you hate them then….these chips will only be available for a limited time. We still don’t know whether this collaboration makes it more or less likely that Lay’s fake French toast and mimosa flavor will become a reality too.
