Whether you're looking for a new challenge or a bigger paycheck, the beginning of a new year is often a busy time for job seekers, HR reps, and hiring managers alike. Though the thought of starting a new role can be exciting, the job hunt itself can be a long and painful slog.
To find out what folks who hire people for a living are looking for in 2025, we asked the HR reps and managers of the BuzzFeed Community to share their tips, and they did not let us down. Here's what they had to say:
Remember that depending on your industry, you may want to take some of these tips with a grain of salt. Always stick to best practices and norms in your field, and look for a mentor like a former boss or colleague if you want more personalized advice.
1.Do make like Sabrina Carpenter and keep your résumé short and sweet.
2.Don't hit send on your cover letter without making sure you've made any updates or edits that may be needed.
3.Don't spam every company in your town with your résumé.
4.Do explain any gaps in your résumé or frequent job changes in your cover letter.
5.Don't bug HR about your application.
6.Do put in the extra work to tailor your résumé to the job you want.
7.Do read up on the company before you interview.
8.Do keep an open mind and be willing to learn new skills so you can snag a new role.
9.Unless it's a longstanding norm in your field, don't put your headshot on your résumé.
10.And don't get too personal on your résumé.
11.Do dress for success and show up to your interview looking the part.
12.Don't rely too heavily on AI, and if you use it, always check its work.
13.Do use important keywords from the job description in your résumé.
14.Do add data to your résumé to show the impact of your work.
15.Do keep an eye on your spam folder and other profiles or places where potential employers might message you.
16.And finally, know that you don't have to be a perfect match for the job description to land the role.

At least 100 people who were trapped in a South African mine have died, a group representing them has said. Sabelo Mnguni, a spokesman for the Mining Affected Communities United in Action Group (MACUA), said a mobile phone sent to the surface with some of the rescued miners on Friday had videos showing dozens of bodies underground wrapped in plastic. Mr Mnguni said "a minimum" of 100 men had died in the mine in the northwest town of Stilfontein, suspected to have died of starvation or dehydration.

LONDON (Reuters) -British online supermarket Ocado Retail reported faster sales growth in its fourth quarter as more competitive pricing helped it win customers from rivals, underlining its position as the country's fastest growing grocer. Ocado Retail, a joint venture between Ocado Group and Marks & Spencer, said on Tuesday its retail revenue rose 17.5% to 715.8 million pounds ($874.9 million) in the 13 weeks to Dec. 1, after growth of 15.5% in its previous quarter, as the number of active customers increased 12.1% to 1.12 million and they shopped on the site more often. CEO Hannah Gibson said the business had benefited from "making sure customers can buy all their favourite M&S products, ensuring our service is near perfect, shifting our value perceptions as customers realise how much we've moved on price and helping new customers discover Ocado."
Florence Girard was so small when she died that she "looked like a child" in her casket, according to her younger sister.
