The delicate ranunculus and low-maintenance snake plant have been awarded the title of Flower and Plant of 2024 by plant delivery service 1-800-Flowers.

If you want to add a new houseplant to your home or are looking forward to planting blooms in your garden, both options should certainly be on your radar as we move into the new year.

This year marks the eighth in which the team at 1-800-Flowers has consulted trends and buyer demand to crown the winners.

"We have seen a growing demand for more unique and distinct floral and plant varieties, such as the ranunculus and snake plant, as a way to expand gift-giving options and bring natural beauty into spaces," says Alfred Palomares, VP of Merchandising and plant expert at 1-800-Flowers.

Ranunculus

"The ranunculus, with its vibrant petals, reflects enthusiasm, love, admiration, and happiness," says Alfred, adding the team has noticed an increased demand for the colourful bloom in 2024.

With their unfurling and ruffled petals, they also make the perfect addition to a floral arrangement or bouquet, with the beautiful blooms often lasting several weeks, if you choose to cut them and display them indoors.

"Ranunculus flowers range from hardy, low-growing perennials, useful in borders or meadows, to buttercups that thrive on the edge of ponds and streams," says the RHS. They are a brilliant option for different gardens and outdoor spaces.

Snake plant

Snake plants are perfect for busy bodies who want to enjoy the benefits of houseplants without the time commitment. Boasting striped sword-like leaves, they are famed for their many benefits including purifying the air and producing oxygen overnight.

"The snake plant represents longevity, health, and growth, says Alfred. "Beyond their striking beauty, these plants offer a meaningful gift that nurtures relationships and promotes well-being — exactly what we're all wishing for in the year ahead."

Snake plants are incredibly low-maintenance, so if you've struggled to keep houseplants alive in the past, this could be a great option for you. They only need watering every two weeks and can tolerate a variety of light conditions.
