Making your own wrapping paper is a lovely part of creating a handmade Christmas – and using rice paper is a brilliant way to do it.

Stronger than tissue paper but still with a beautiful delicate quality to it, Japanese rice paper makes for a very pretty gift wrap, especially when painted or decorated.

We've put together a step-by-step guide to design and paint your own rice paper gift wrap – it's much easier than you'd think and creates beautiful results. It can be used for presents all year round, but will look especially lovely under your Christmas tree.

We've used gouache paint for this craft project – it's an opaque paint that's water-based, meaning you can blend and soften the colours easily. The design we've chosen is abstract, but you could paint snowflakes, Christmas trees or other festive motifs if you prefer.

Happy crafting!

Tips for painting on rice paper

Place paper or a mat under the fine paper to protect surfaces from paint seeping through.

Sketch a design with pencil first then layer rice paper on top and use the pencil drawing as a template to paint over.

1. Use different sized and shaped paintbrushes to create bright, bold patterns on rice paper with gouache paint. Thin the paint slightly with drops of water for a more sheer colour but take care not to add too much water which might make the paper wrinkle. Leave to dry completely.

2. Cut out a rectangle from card. Measure the halfway point along a short end and draw a line 2cm up from that point. Snip diagonally from each near corner up to that point to make a dovetail flag shaped end. Punch a hole in the opposite end and thread through a ribbon.
