Ncuti Gatwa and Helena Bonham Carter will lead an all-star remake of the Dickens classic David Copperfield.

Former Bond director Sam Mendes is teaming up with Audible for an audio version of Dickens's 1850 novel, which is loosely based on events and people from the author's own life.

The timeless story follows young David (Doctor Who's Ncuti) on his journey to adulthood, through first love and meetings with friends like the suave James Steerforth (The White Lotus's Theo James) and the eccentric Aunt Betsey (The Crown's Helena Bonham-Carter).

The cast will actually be recording sections of the audio-drama in the Charles Dickens Museum, using high-definition Dolby Atmos sound.

This will be the second Dickens adaptation for Mendes and Audible, after previously releasing an Oliver Twist adaptation starring Succession's Brian Cox and Heartstropper actor Kit Connor, among many others.

"I'm thrilled to continue my collaboration with Audible after the success of Oliver Twist and where better to go next than to David Copperfield, which for so many – and indeed for Dickens himself – is a favourite amongst his canon," Mendes said.

"We have an outstanding cast, led by the incomparable Ncuti Gatwa whose amazing comic timing brings new dimensions to the character of David. In the sound design we've leaned into hyperrealism so that the listener really feels like they're on the journey with David through his misfortunes and triumphs. Another feast for the ears."

The ensemble cast for David Copperfield also includes Chernobyl actress Jessie Buckley, The Stranger's Richard Armitage and Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who co-star Indira Varma.

The impressive cast is rounded off by Slow Horses's Jack Lowden as the iconic literary villain Uriah Heep and newcomer Reece Kenwyne Mpudzi as the young version of David Copperfield.

Pre-orders are available now for David Copperfield, ahead of an exclusive release on Audible from November 30, 2023.
