As a winter chill creeps in, we're looking for cost-effecting heating solutions this year and a plug heater is our best find yet.

There's something we love about the colder season: a chance to wear our big, comfy coats, clutching hot chocolates and mulled wine and feeling zero guilt about bedding down for the night and watching Christmas films on Netflix while tucking into the sweet treats we promised we'd save for the big day.

However, while feeling a chill outside might add to the magic of the season, feeling it inside? Not so much -which is likely why heater plugs have sold out across a wide range of stores.

As autumn began, many of you were quick to snap up the Russell Hobbs 500W Ceramic Plug Heater. Since then, getting your hands on a small but effective plug heater has been hard to do, with the similar Staywarm 500w Plugin Heater selling out at Currys, Dunelm and Robert Dyas.

Luckily, we've found the it in stock at Amazon and it's already zooming up the best-sellers list as hundreds of five-star reviews say it costs just 8p an hour to run.

Although this is will vary depending on your domestic electricity prices, recent reviews confirm it has cost customers on average 20p to 30p per day, if used it a few times a day for short periods.

Why we rate it

Not only is it cheaper than heating the entire house via the boiler, it uses less energy than conventional heaters with no messy leads or wires, as it plugs straight into the wall socket.

Simply plug directly in to a mains wall socket and press the on/off button to operate; the illuminated power light will activate when the appliance is switched on, to visually show you that the device is running.

And you can tailor the temperature to your exact requirements within a range of 15-30°C controlled by the LED display for easy use, day and night.

Much like many electrical devices, there are safety precautions that need to be taken into consideration, such as never leaving it unattended and being diligent while using - we recommend reading the instruction manual that comes with the product for any other cautions to be aware of.

With safety in mind, the plug has an overheat protection feature to shut off the device if temperatures rise too high and a 60 second delay timer is also featured when switching off to ensure the product is cool before fully shutting down.

What the reviews say

The product has 51% five star ratings out of 1,932 reviews - the plugin power heater is being praised by shoppers who were looking for a "quick fix" to help them keep warm this winter, and keep the costs low too.

Some used it in the kitchen to keep them toasty as they brewed their first coffee of the day, others used it in the bedroom and some used it in their living room to ensure the cosiest of Netflix nights.

Many felt it worked "really well" and was ideal for spaces where the radiator wasn't strong enough or working, it even managed to heat up the "coldest rooms" in the house.

It also costs around "8p" an hour to run according to saving-savvy shoppers ...not too shabby.
