What Happened to Irving on 'Severance'?
The office retreat in Severance episode 4 is a company outing steeped in nightmares. When the episode begins, the Macrodata Refinement (MDR) team finds itself out of the office and scattered about a snowy landscape. Forget the fact that this is the first time they have ever experienced snow—episode 4 is only the second time that our Innies have ever been outside. So, imagine their surprise when their boss, Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman), informs them that their Outies approved a team-building field trip for them without their approval.
At the end of the trek throughout the icy wilderness, Irving B. (John Turturro) makes a startling discovery. He suspected Helly R. (Britt Lower) was Helena Egan since she lied about her “night gardener” back in the season 2 premiere—and theorists on Reddit certainly ran with the idea until they were convinced it was true. Turns out, Irving hit the bullseye.
Following a chilling fever dream that ends in an epiphany, Irving realises Helly R. is an Eagan. Then, he threatens to drown her in a pond unless Mr. Milchick switches her back to Helly R.—once again proving that he can trigger their switch from anywhere. Satisfied that he was right about Lumon’s interference, Irving accepts his fate.
Is Irving Dead?
Yes. Well, sort of. Irving is alive, but Irving’s Innie is likely “dead.” If someone is fired from Lumon, their Innie no longer shows up to work. So, they’re essentially gone forever. Fans may recall that when Burt (Christopher Walken) retired, his Innie’s life ended as well. Now, it seems that Irving’s termination will result in a similar fate.
“You have threatened collegial murder in the pond of Woe’s Hollow,” Mr. Milchick says. “For this, there can be no penalty but immediate and permanent dismissal.” As Milchick reminds him, “It will be as if you, Irving B., never even existed nor drew a single breath upon this Earth.”
Fans will have to wait until next week to find out what happens to Irving after his Innie's termination, as well as the fate of the MDR team. Since season 2 began, it’s likely that every time Helly R. was on screen she was Helena Eagan. Fans may rejoice that they successfully predicted the switch, but the MDR team will likely never be the same.
