The handsome house hiding in a country lane with an unusual neighbour
There are little lanes that wander through the countryside near Wales' capital city that most people probably don't know exist, but have an explore down them and you come across tiny hamlets, pretty villages and semi-rural, and panoramic views.
The area that is Cardiff's closest neighbour to the west is a slice of Vale of Glamorgan that can offer unique homes that are easily commutable to Cardiff, Penarth, Barry and the M4 and yet feel like an escape to the country away from the busy roads and retail parks.
Off the chaotic roundabout at Cardiff's Culverhouse Cross junction of the A48 do your best to ignore the variety of national brands to visit such as Marks & Spencer, Tesco and TK Maxx at Valegate Retails Park and off the busy road heading towards Barry there's a lane that takes you to a sprinkling of hamlets that still feel like they have left the city behind. One of those hamlets is St Lythans but before you get there the lane meanders through Twyn-yr-Odyn which offers a temping stop at the Horse & Jockey pub before you turn out of the village to try and find an unusual auction property.
Called Reservoir House, the handsome red brick home is found at the end of a private driveway and stands in the centre of its substantial garden offering 360 degree views across the landscape of fields, hedgerows and the occasional rooftop plus the unique neighbour of the Wenvoe transmitter.
The property is called Reservoir House and is said by the auction house selling the home that it was once the caretaker's house but looking at a map of the area finding that reservoir is nowhere to be seen. A bit more digging around on google reveals, via website Coflein, that there was once a reservoir to the east of the village of Wenvoe but is now filled in.
Gemma Vaughan, handling the sale for the Newport property auctioneers, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for someone to buy this unusual, three bedroom detached house located on a private drive near the ever-popular village of St Lythans. The house, in the hamlet of Twyn-Yr-Odyn close to Wenvoe, has been substantially modernised by the current vendors to create a comfortable, modern home. It is ideally located for access to Cardiff, Barry and the M4 corridor.
The welcoming hallway leads, through a charming brick archway, providing access to a home office, living room and steps to the upper ground floor which has a kitchen and bathroom. The stairs lead to the three spacious bedrooms on the first floor.
Gemma comments: "A pre-application for planning permission to redevelop Reservoir House by demolishing the existing house. The proposal is to replace the former caretaker’s property with 2 no detached dwellings with shared driveway to the front and separate rear gardens and has been lodged with planners." The auction house goes on to state that the pre-application planning number is 2019/00164/PRE.
The former caretaker's house is listed with a guide price of £350,000-plus by Paul Fosh Auctions and is being sold via their website with bidding starting from 12 noon on Tuesday February 4 and ending from 5pm on Thursday, February 6, call 01633 254044 to find out more.
