Gloria Vanderbilt’s Former Beverly Hills Estate Hits the Market for $16.5 Million

Late socialite and multi-hyphenate Gloria Vanderbilt was born into the uppermost echelons of American society during the 1920s, inheriting her family’s vast wealth and influence accumulated during the Gilded Age via the railroad and shipping industries. It was her personal interests in fashion, literature, and art, however, that made her the enduring icon she became before her death in 2019. On the heels of her 101st birthday, a Beverly Hills residence with ties to the businesswoman and creative spirit has splashed onto the market for $16.5 million. And its many famous visitors make it all the more appealing.

Elvis Presley, Bob Evans, and Henry Miller are a few of the A-listers Vanderbilt hosted at the spacious home on North Maple Drive. She leased the Tudor Revival mansion just off Sunset Boulevard in 1941, at age 17, while working as a model in Los Angeles. The circa 1927 residence was later scooped up by The Red Stallion movie star Noreen Nash, who lived there for 70 years. Josh Flagg of Compass holds the listing.

“This is one of the largest lots on the best block in one of the most coveted neighborhoods of the Flats,” Flagg says in a statement, where surrounding pads go for between $10 and $18 million.

Set on over half an acre, the main residence’s brick-accented façade sits back from the sidewalk with an deep front yard that includes a flat expanse of lawn, manicured shrubs, and mature trees. Through its arched, red-brick entryway stands the foyer beneath a soaring ceiling with a grand staircase that curls up to the second-floor bedrooms. Double doors lead into the ample formal dining room, where the honey-toned hardwood floors pop against delicate, gold-toned damask wallpaper.

The dining room retains its original proportions with crown moldings and hardwood floors.

Elsewhere on the main floor, there’s an airy step-down formal living room housing a wood-burning fireplace, a library, and a family room. As with other parts of the house, including the kitchen and baths, the primary bedroom and bath just off the second-floor landing are dated.

The backyard, too, could use some sprucing up, but it is generously sized with a massive swimming pool. A detached garage, guest house, and off-street parking for at least 14 cars round out the property. The proximity to Rodeo Drive, the Los Angeles Country Club, and the Beverly Hills Hotel only adds to its appeal.
