This $2.5 Million Richard Neutra-Designed Home Is Embedded into Its Hollywood Hills Surroundings

Crafted over eight decades ago by master architect Richard Neutra, this site-specific Los Angeles residence consists of two overlapping stucco and redwood cubes deftly angled into the steeply sloping terrain. Last sold in 2018 for $1.8 million and subsequently offered as a monthly rental for as much as $9,700, the modernist Hollywood Hills home has just popped up for sale at a smidge under $2.5 million. Todd Bachenheimer of Compass holds the listing.

Originally built in 1941 to the tune of $5,400 for novelist and L.A. Times reporter Theodore Bonnet and his wife Lois, a publicity writer for film studios, the aptly named Bonnet House was praised soon after its completion in the Architectural Record, as well as Arts & Artists magazine. The International-style abode was also designated as an L.A. Historic-Cultural Landmark in 2020.

The dwelling, which retains Neutra’s original floor plan, offers two bedrooms and a matching number of baths in a little more than 1,500 square feet of split-level living space. Gently restored and updated in the early 2000s, it’s highlighted by hardwood floors, plywood-paneled walls, and ribbon windows with crank casements, along with new electrical and plumbing, central air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, digital TV, and wired sound.

Resting on less than a quarter of an acre in the historic Hollywood Dell neighborhood, the redwood-sided and shed roof structure is fronted by a lower stucco cube housing a one-car garage. Steps tucked off to the side lead up to a southwest-facing flagstone view deck, which opens via sliding glass doors into an upper-level great room sporting a living area warmed by a floor-to-ceiling whitewashed brick fireplace. An adjacent dining area connects via a swinging door to the small yet nicely appointed galley kitchen, which dons marble countertops, stainless appliances, and a wine fridge.

Elsewhere is a glass-lined primary bedroom flaunting a curving open-hearth fireplace and a bath dressed in Heath ceramic tile, plus another lower-level bedroom with a kitchenette and an original bath that’s currently being used as a media room. Rounding it all out are the private grounds, which host several alfresco spaces ideal for lounging and dining amid the enveloping flora and fauna.
