He's the man of the moment, with his first major blockbuster, Gladiator II, coming to the big screen later this week - but despite his ever-growing army of fans, for Paul Mescal, mum still comes first.

The 28-year-old actor who shot to fame in the BBC's 2020 adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel Normal People, ensured his mum was top the guest list for the Irish premiere of his new film - and he made a very sweet gesture while he was at it.

Speaking to Miriam O'Callaghan on RTE Radio 1's Sunday with Miriam, Paul's mum Dearbhla, who was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma - a type of bone marrow cancer that can affect the spine - in July 2022, shared how touched she was that her son invited her cancer doctor to the premiere.

"Paul actually invited my doctor to the premiere, so that was so lovely, it was so lovely to see him out of context," she said.

She also shared the good news that her cancer is in remission. "My body has accepted the treatment and is continuing to accept the treatment," she revealed.

Dearbhla, who shares three children with Paul's dad, Paul Senior, spoke of how fortunate she feels, in spite of her battle with cancer.

"The two of us are very lucky, we’re retired and we’re in good health and that’s kind of unusual in your 50s, so I’m feeling very lucky and feeling very blessed.

"My three children are well and I don't think any parent can ask for more than that, to be honest."

Here's to many more mother-son nights out together.

Gladiator II is in cinemas from 15th November.
