Girlfriend Is Disappointed After Boyfriend’s 'Surprise' Christmas Gift Derails Her Holiday Plans
A 23-year-old took to Reddit to share her frustrations after her boyfriend got her a Christmas gift opposite from what she dreamed about
A 23-year-old woman is seeking advice from the Reddit community after her boyfriend got her a Christmas present she isn’t quite thrilled about — a week of fun with her younger sister.
While the woman acknowledged his gift to be well-intentioned, the surprise isn’t what she had in mind for their third Christmas together. The two had finally reached financial stability and planned to celebrate their “first real Christmas together," she writes. “Together our bonuses are a combined 1500 dollars, and we agree this is the firm budget for Christmas gifts, split evenly."
The woman envisioned the celebration to be at home with essentials they’ve made lists for, including clothes and household items. “I told him several times that I was so excited for ‘our’ first real Christmas, and I told him over and over again how extremely romantic and intimate I thought it was going to be,” she writes.
However, her boyfriend’s surprise gift thew a wrench in her plans when he used a significant amount of the gift budget to fly the woman’s younger sister into town for a week of activities for the three of them.
“My gift is that my sister is getting a vacation to my apartment,” the woman says. “I love my sister, and we are very close but it’s because I am more like a parent to her.”

The 23-year-old shares the surprise not only derailed their intimate holiday but added responsibility the woman hoped to leave behind for the season. “When I moved away and met my boyfriend, I had some independence from this,” she writes, adding, “but now something I was really looking forward to has been turning into a baby-sitting experience.”
To make matters stickier, she reveals her boyfriend did buy her a few items off her list but not any practical gifts she wished for. “He got me 1-3 items off of my list, but none of these items were the things I needed i.e. warm clothes, shoes, bras, a winter coat, cosmetics,” she shares.
Frustrated by the gift, the woman began to cry, she admits. “I'm upset that my boyfriend doesn't know me well enough to know that this was actually one of the worst things he could do for me,” she shares. “He knows I hate surprises and grand gestures. I told him this really ruined my Christmas.”

The woman says the boyfriend found her response to be “ungrateful and that he tried his best to be thoughtful” to which she responds: “I can't shake the feeling that this was the last thing from thoughtful.”
Since sharing her frustrations on Reddit, users have suggested she return his gifts for smaller items. Others believe there is more to the story than he’s letting on. “Your parents reached out to him and “suggested” this surprise gift,” one Redditor wrote. “Ask him how he came up with & orchestrated this idea. Get him to be honest and tell you the whole truth.”
