Georgian villa restored by fashion designer for sale in Cornwall
Ex-fashion designer Drew Muntz was once responsible for dressing A-listers. Heading up clothing label Bodyamr, his dresses were worn by Beyonce, Florence and the Machine and Jennifer Lopez. These days he's turned his creative skills to interiors, specialising in reviving historical properties, including this Grade II listed building in the heart of Truro, Cornwall.
The four-bedroom villa, known as Castle Lodge, was originally built in the 1820s by Philip Sambell, a local architect renowned for creating lots of the city's Georgian buildings, despite being self-taught and impaired with both deafness and muteness.
Today, the villa is in impeccable condition and stands out with its pistachio green stucco fronted exterior – the colour was inspired by classical Italian villas. Beautiful original features have been restored throughout, such as marble fireplaces, pilasters, mouldings and shuttered sash windows.
On entering, we're greeted with an exquisite Carrara marble floored entrance hall with walls in fine polished pale pink plaster. Two adjoining reception rooms on the left boast restored marble fireplaces, sash shuttered windows and bespoke ceiling roses.
On the right side of the ground floor there is a delightful Smallbone kitchen in a pale blue finish with antiqued mirror doors and a bespoke steel extractor fan hood. Also in the kitchen stands an impressive pedimented limestone fireplace, and tucked in the corner there is a relaxed dining area complete with an enviable bespoke L-shaped bench.
A traditional Georgian scullery (a separate room for dishwashing) sits at the back of the kitchen. Behind the kitchen is a utility room and an opulent powder room that features in-built chinoiserie furniture, backlit tortoiseshell walls and a black marble basin and WC.
Upstairs, there are four double bedrooms – all of them decorated in their own style to tell a different story. The main bedroom, referred to as the 'Master Coral' suite features palm motif wallpaper and a striking ensuite featuring green porcelain with chrome accents.
The 'Coastal Boat' bedroom is defined by its powder blue coloured timber panelling; the 'Giant Clam' room features a floating clam canopy over the bed; and the 'Campaign room', the smallest bedroom, is a cosy space distinguished by multicoloured striped fabric that wraps around the bed. Upholstered window seats, sisal carpets and louvered windows feature in all the bedrooms, creating continuity.
Also on the first floor are two more impressive bathrooms, one designed in Carrara marble with a bespoke clam-shaped sink, and the other in a beautiful orange veined marble.
The house has a delightful front garden that includes a stone terrace surrounded by cypress, palm and magnolia trees, enclosed by carefully restored original Georgian railings.
This remarkable property is on the market now with Savills at a guide price of £950,000. Tour the home below...
