Gemma Atkinson’s confession about Gorka Marquez working away for five weeks - ‘it’s easier for me’
Gemma Atkinson has given an insight into her relationship with fiancé Gorka Marquez, as the pair continue to spend long stretches of time apart. The couple began dating in 2017 after meeting on Strictly Come Dancing and are now parents to two children - Mia, four, and nine month old Thiago.
Gemma, 39, has had to get used to Gorka's gruelling work schedule, as he works as a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing among other roles. The dad-of-two, 33, has been spending time in his native Spain over recent months for other projects, including being a judge on the Spanish version of Strictly, called Bailando con las Estrellas.
Gemma admitted it can sometimes be "easier" to get into a good routine at home when Gorka is away working. Speaking on her Hits Radio show, which she co-hosts with Mike Toolan, Gemma opened up about her home life.
"He's away for five weeks now who knows where, He's all over the shop. It is tough and it isn't - it takes a village they say with kids and I'm very fortunate that my mum and my sister are very close by," the mum-of-two said.
She went on to add: "It's all me and Gorka have known, so sometimes it is easier for me to get into the routine with the children whilst he's not here and then he comes back and ruins the routine." She however noted that he's "nice to have around the house".
Gemma previously revealed she is understanding of Gorka's work commitments as she has taken part in Strictly Come Dancing herself, meaning she knows the lengthy hours that go into the show. Speaking on Lorraine Kelly's ITV show, she said Gorka is "home during the week" and explained how people think it might be strange that they are apart a lot but that’s how it’s been since they met.
She added: “Because I have done Strictly and I know that side of it, it’s not a shock to me. Army wives, their partners are away for six or seven months and they make out that I’ve been moaning that I’ve been on my own for three weeks but really I am having the best time.” Gemma went on to describe their partnership as “unstoppable” in a sweet comment.
Gemma and Gorka met on Strictly in 2017. Gemma was partnered with Aljaž Škorjanec, while Gorka was paired with singer Alexandra Burke. The pair got engaged in 2021 after a Valentine's Day proposal.
