Rob Brydon has shared his true feelings on Gavin and Stacey's co-creator James Corden ahead of the show's hugely-anticipated finale on Christmas Day.

The BBC comedy is due to come to an end on Christmas Day with a 90-minute finale after the show last aired in 2019 for a one-off festive episode which ended on a cliffhanger, as Vanessa “Nessa” Jenkins, played by Ruth Jones, proposed to Corden’s character Neil “Smithy” Smith.

The hit TV series, which followed the titular couple falling in love despite one living in Essex and the other in Wales, aired for three series between 2007 and 2010 and returned for a Christmas special in 2008.

Since creating the show alongside Jones, the dad-of-three's career has gone from strength to strength. The 46-year-old has appeared in a number of musicals including Into The Woods and Cats, as well as the National Theatre show One Man, Two Guvnors, which transferred from the West End to Broadway, with Corden winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.

However, the former A League of Their Own presenter most notably rose to prominence in America when he became host of the late-night talk show The Late Late Show in 2015. The star has welcomed a host of celebrities into his car for the popular segment 'Carpool Karaoke', including Adele, Sir Elton John, Mariah Carey, Harry Styles and Stevie Wonder.

Despite his success across the pond, Gavin and Stacey co-star Rob Brydon believes he doesn't get the adulation he deserves in the UK. Speaking on Jamie Laing's Great Company podcast today, December 23, the Welsh comedian said his achievements were "unprecedented".

Speaking about the final days of filming, Rob said: "I thought it would feel emotional on the last day, which indeed it did, floods of tears. But, anytime we were doing a sort of communal scene, where there's a bunch of us, I would sit there and I'd look and I'd see Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb.

"I'd see Ruth and I'd see James, and I would think 'wow, I have lived this experience with these people and it's been 20 years since it began and we've all grown and changed.

"We've all gone and done our different things. James I suppose most most notably he went off and conquered America which he doesn't get the praise for that he deserves. Unprecedented, I mean, who else has done that?"

Gavin and Stacey fans will be eagerly tuning in on Christmas Day to see if they finally get an answer to what ever happened on Uncle Bryn, played by Brydon, and his nephew Jason's, infamous fishing trip.

Speaking earlier in the podcast, the Would I Lie To You? host hinted that fans may never find out what did happen that day between him and Jason.

When asked by Jamie what really happened, he replied: "I'm not going to tell you. You wouldn't really want to know, would you?

"I'm somebody who, if my wife has bought me a present, say at Christmas, and it's under the tree, there is no part of me that wants to go 'I wonder what it is'.

"No, no, no, I am for delayed gratification. Let's wait, let's enjoy it. And even when I'm opening it, I'm opening it slowly."

Gavin And Stacey: The Finale will air on BBC One from 9pm on Christmas Day and will also be available on BBC iPlayer.
