Fluffy Pam and her lambs crowned ‘Sheep of the Year’
British Wool has crowned its ‘Sheep of the Year’ – with a fluffy mum-of-three named Pam taking the top spot.
A picture of Pam – a Poll Dorset Valais – with her three lambs, all enjoying life on their farm in Salisbury Plain, in Wiltshire, took the crown.
Some sweet-and-smiley Greyface Dartmoor lambs were also awarded the ‘runner up’ prize in the competition.
Each week, British Wool shares its ‘Sheep of the Week’ to Instagram, submitted by farmers across the country – and the winning pictures were chosen by the public, who were given a selection of 12 (one from each month of 2024) to choose from.
With the UK boasting more than 60 breeds of sheep, including hardy hill and mountain varieties to lowland breeds, voters were faced with a tough decision in selecting their favourite wooly face.
Pam and her lovely lambs in Wiltshire scooped the overall prize as 'Sheep of the Year' for 2024, but British Wool has also released images of the shortlist – which include two affectionate Herdwick lambs, a flock scaling the West Pennine Moors at Rivington and two Romney ewes peering through a gate.
Graham Clark, Marketing Director at British Wool, said: “We wanted to bring a little bit of joy to January and get the nation involved in one of our most-loved traditions – because who doesn’t feel uplifted by adorable photos of sheep.
“We might handle and grade the wool we receive, but this is all about putting the fuzzy faces that provide it for us into the spotlight.”
You can find some images on the shortlist below – and they’re certainly guaranteed to brighten your day.
