New Fear Unlocked: Woman Finds Hundreds of Bugs In Her ALDI Pasta
One Australian mom received an unwelcome surprise when she recently boiled her pasta... and discovered hundreds of tiny bugs floating to the surface of the water. The pasta, which was purchased at a local ALDI, had been infiltrated by weevils, a common pest that is known for getting into your flour, rice, pasta and other dry goods commonly stored in a pantry.
The shopper posted on the Facebook group ALDI Mums to share her experience, stating, “When you’re a mum of 2 under 2 and you have limited time for cooking, this is the absolute worst feeling." Many group members flocked to the comments section to regale the poster with their own weevil horror stories, but also assured her that weevil infestation is unfortunately a common occurrence.
One commenter on the original Facebook post said, "Whoa you got the free protein pasta upgrade." Another provided some helpful advice: "To keep weevils out of your pantry scatter **** BAY leaves **** around on the shelves..."
"I've had these in rice and flour before, I just chuck straight out. But apparently you can eat them?? Not for me thank you," wrote one person.
A commenter on a NY Post article detailing the story wrote, "I live in the South and we have a big problem with weevils in the summer so I always check my pasta, rice and grains and mainly put them in the fridge during summer months. Like this person, I learned the hard way but it was a lesson well noted."
Another shared more practical advice: "Keep your pasta and flour in the freezer. Problem solved."
Others found the humor in the situation like one of the Facebook commenters, exclaiming, "It's all protein....enjoy!"
A silver lining was noted by one commenter who noted, "I'm more concerned by the processed 'food' that bugs refuse to eat and continues to look the same week after week. Bugs being willing to eat our food is a good sign."
While it's certainly not an exciting thing to find in the middle of cooking up a delicious dinner, it's not necessarily indicative of poor food quality standards. Weevils are simply a creature you have to be on the lookout for in order to avoid a kitchen catastrophe.
